Psalm 75:1 (ESV): “1 We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds.”
It’s been said that gratitude is the greatest virtue of humanity and the parent of all others. If you desire to be a person of virtue, begin with thankfulness.
Asaph wrote this psalm for a congregational setting. Imagine thousands of people singing together, “We give thanks to You, O God; we give thanks!” The repetition emphasizes the depth and sincerity of their gratitude. The people of God have countless reasons to praise Him—most importantly, for who He is and what He has done for us. We can feel His presence, for He is near. He came down to dwell among us. Asaph calls us to be grateful and to give thanks to God!
What is your general mood in life? Are you mostly sad, angry, or joyful? When we focus on ourselves and what is or isn’t happening in our lives, our mood often turns negative. Instead, we need to focus on God and count our blessings. Train your mind to dwell on the good things God has done. This practice will not only uplift your spirit but also transform your mindset. Regularly giving thanks to God will yield lasting dividends.
Father, we give thanks to You, for who is like You? You are near to us and are working in our lives in countless ways, even in ways we cannot see. Give us eyes to recognize what You are doing so that we may give You praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
