Psalm 48:12-14

Psalm 48:12–14 (ESV): “12  Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, 13  consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation, 14  that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.”

In the late 19th century, Queen Victoria of England reportedly asked her Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, what evidence he could provide for the existence of God. He thought for a moment and then replied, “The Jew, Your Majesty. The Jew.”

As the psalmist considers the greatness of Jerusalem—her defenses, strength, and majesty—he is reminded that they are merely a reflection of the God of this nation. He is the real defender, strength, and majesty of Israel. God has done so much to reveal Himself to His people, and they should faithfully pass this knowledge on to the generations to come. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the Redeemer of Israel from every foe. He will forever be their God, and they will forever be His people.

What evidence do you have of God’s existence? Israel is certainly a powerful one. But what about your life? Nothing happens by chance. God is a God who reveals Himself to every individual through creation and circumstance. All the great things He has done in your life are meant to encourage the generations to come. Witness to those around you of His goodness—that He is always with us, even to the end of the age. Amen?

Father, thank You for the sign of Israel. This nation demonstrates Your faithfulness. May we use this and our own personal experiences to share the greatness of who You are with the coming generations. In Jesus’ name, amen.
