Psalm 46:10–11 (ESV): “10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah”
Confidence in God comes as a result of knowing Him. You will never be able to rest in the midst of your trials except by knowing He is God. It is the glorious attribute of a relationship with Him that brings peace to our hearts in all things.
The psalmist begins this psalm not by describing his troubles but by pointing to the solution to his troubles: God. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we shall not fear. The psalmist goes on to declare that no matter what comes his way, he can rest in God. The idea of being still is not about ceasing all activity but about surrendering all thoughts and emotions to God, knowing that He is more than able to handle them. Knowing Him produces this kind of response in troubled times.
Do you spend time regularly getting to know God? Are you seeking to grow in your relationship with Him daily? This is where your confidence will come from when times get tough. The less you know Him, the less you will be able to rest in Him. Take time each day to learn something new about God. Spend time in His Word and in prayer. Gather with other believers and talk about the greatness of who He is. The more you do this, the more you will be able to “be still” and know that He is God. Amen?
Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself to us. You are more than enough for us. May we spend our lives getting to know You more so that we can rest in You in all things. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
