Psalm 34:17-18

Psalm 34:17–18 (ESV):17  When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

God is not an absent Father. He is a God who is near. He never misses the cry of one of His children, and He never fails to act on their behalf.

David penned these words from the cave of Adullam, shortly after he pretended to be a madman before Achish, the king of Gath, while fleeing from Saul (1 Sam 21:10). In this psalm, David reflects on the fatherly nature of our God. He is ever-present in our lives, hearing the cries of His children as any good father should. He draws near to the brokenhearted and lifts up those who are crushed in spirit. David knew God to be a good and loving Father, always available to him, especially in times of distress.

How do you view God? Perhaps you didn’t have a great example of a father in your life. Know this: God is a perfect Father. He is with us even before we speak a word. He is already working in our situation before we pray a single prayer. God knows exactly what we need and provides for us in His perfect way. He is with you right now. He hears your cries and has drawn near to you. He will encourage you and never forsake you. This is our Father in heaven. Run to Him today. Amen?

Father, we thank You for being so faithful to us. You are an intimate God who knows our every need. Meet us today and work in ways only You can. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
