Proverbs 6:9-11 (ESV): “9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”
Work existed before the Fall. God commanded Adam to be fruitful, multiply, and subdue the land (Gen. 1:28). His original plan was for man to work the land. God desires for you to work—so don’t be lazy!
Solomon warns his son against laziness, emphasizing that being a sluggard leads to both financial and spiritual poverty. Laziness results in a spiritual stupor, leaving you bankrupt and in need before you even realize it. As Paul states, “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat” (2 Thess. 3:10).
We have all been sluggards at times. What kind of fruit has that produced in your life? The answer isn’t “no fruit” but “bad fruit.” It’s a dangerous place to be because it leaves you vulnerable to even more sin. The retirement plan for Christians is heaven, and we will still have work to do there! So don’t grow lazy—it’s time to work, both physically and spiritually. This is all part of His design. Amen?
Father, we thank You for reminding us of the dangers of laziness. Keep us productive until You call us home. May the way we work bring glory to Your name. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
