Proverbs 5:21

Proverbs 5:21 (ESV): For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord, and he ponders all his paths.”

Nothing is hidden from God. He sees all our ways, including our motives and intentions. Therefore, we should order our lives—both privately and publicly—to please Him in all that we do.

Solomon reminds his son to be attentive and incline his ear to his wisdom regarding sexual sin. He warns that the lips of a “forbidden woman” drip honey—her words are sweet and enticing. If he is not careful, she can easily seduce him. Solomon instructs him to “keep far from her” and to “drink from his own cistern,” finding satisfaction in his wife alone. He then declares, “For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord, and he ponders all his paths.”

How do you guard yourself against the things that trip you up in life? We must recognize our weaknesses and put safeguards in place. Whether your struggle is sexual in nature or not, sin has a way of seducing us. We must avoid the places where the “forbidden woman” lurks—whatever that may symbolize in our lives. Others may never find out, but God sees all. Let the thought of His ever-watchful eyes motivate you to do what is necessary to keep yourself in check. After all, He is the only One we will answer to after this life. Live for the Lord both privately and publicly.

Father, we thank You for reminding us that You see all. We are accountable to You for how we live, so help us to walk in ways that please You. May the things that grieve You also grieve us. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
