Proverbs 31:4-5 (ESV): “4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.”
Drinking isn’t a sin, but getting drunk is. It’s easy to cross that line, and when a person does, the potential for bad decisions multiplies. We need to be sober-minded so that we can be vigilant in how we live. Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.
Solomon gives a strong warning to his sons regarding the snare of alcohol. He makes it clear that a king has certain responsibilities which require him to lay down certain liberties in order to fulfill his role to the fullest. One of those liberties includes drinking. A king can’t afford to have his judgment impaired in any way if he hopes to leave a great legacy.
Is it wrong for Christians to drink? The answer is no—it is not a sin unless it leads to drunkenness. However, just because I can doesn’t mean I should. What value does alcohol add to your life? How does it strengthen your witness for Christ? Again, while it’s not a sin to drink, if the risk outweighs the reward, then why do it? All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. Be wise about what you allow into your life, lest you become captive to a liberty you once freely exercised. Amen?
Father, we thank You for reminding us of the potential snares in Christian liberties. Give us wisdom in how we exercise them, and help us not to cross the line. May we live for You and You alone. In Jesus’ name, amen and amen!
