Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 (ESV): “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said,“See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.”

Life in the natural, fallen state is on repeat. There is truly nothing new under the sun for the unregenerate person. However, for those who are born again, everything changes. We are made new in Christ. The cycle of futility is broken, and we begin to live for a Kingdom that is above the sun.

The book of Ecclesiastes centers on a “Preacher” (traditionally understood to be Solomon) who wrestles with the question: What is the meaning of life? He embarks on a journey to explore every earthly pleasure and pursuit known to man—wisdom, wealth, work, and indulgence—yet he ends up empty. Why? Because life apart from God is ultimately meaningless. Our lives are not complete without the Lord.  But once we have Him—once we are in Christ and walking with Him—the cycle of the fallen nature is broken. All things become new. We are then called to walk in the newness of life (Rom. 6:4), no longer bound to the old patterns of sin and despair.

Are you feeling discouraged with life right now? Does it seem like no one has real answers? God has the answers. He invites us to seek Him—and when we do, He reveals all that we need to know. More than that, He satisfies our souls. He reminds us that we are not living for this world, but for another Kingdom, where all things are truly made new (Rev. 21:5).  Those in Christ are not stuck on repeat with the rest of the world. We have been transformed by the Spirit, and each day we live with purpose: to know Him and to make Him known. Amen?

Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself to us. You are above the sun, and therefore anyone who lives for You lives in newness. Remind us of this daily, so that we don’t get pulled back into the old cycle. Help us walk in Your truth, with hearts set on knowing You and making You known. In Jesus’ name, amen.
