Romans 7:18-19

Romans 7:18–19 (ESV): "18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing."

Good person? Maybe in comparison to another human being but never according to God's definition of good. No one will make it to heaven because they were a "good person."

Paul is perhaps one of the most souled out people to live. So much so that God used him to write thirteen (possibly fourteen if he wrote Hebrews) of the twenty-seven New Testament books of the Bible. Yet he claims himself as the chief of sinners (1 Tim 1:15). Even though we are redeemed, we are still in a sinful body that cannot in and of itself do good or live righteously. Even Paul recognizes that although he has the desire to do right he has no capacity in the flesh to do so. The evil he desires not to do, he continues to do. Thank the Lord for the Holy Spirit! He gives us the ability to walk in holiness. If only we would consistently do this!

How good are you? If you dig deep and are honest you will come to the same conclusion Paul did. He had a desire to live a sinless life but wasn't able to because of the flesh. Thus our focus shouldn't be to walk perfectly in the flesh but to walk in the Spirit for then we will walk in holiness. The only good we have in us is the Holy Spirit. Rest in Him and you will avoid much sin, amen?

Father, we thank You that You see us as You see Your Son. May we understand our total depravity apart from Your Spirit. Strengthen and encourage us to walk strong in the Spirit we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
