Revelation 9:1-3

Revelation 9:1–3 (ESV): "And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. 2 He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. 3 Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth."

In the witness protection program those who are testimonies of the truth are brought under the protection of the State to preserve their lives from the harm of the evil ones. So too will it be for those who are marked with the seal of God in the Tribulation period. Only those who are witnesses of Christ will be protected by God from the demonic mayhem that will ensue the fifth trumpet.

After the fifth trumpet is sounded John sees an angel, possibly good or bad, was given the keys to the bottomless pit. It was a prison of the most vile of demons (Lk 8:31; 2 Pt 2:4; Jude 6). God would now use the demonic realm as a means of turning hearts to Jesus. Make no mistake, the demonic realm is under the rulership of Christ and God will only allow them to work as He sees fit. This demonic horde of locusts are peculiar in appearance. They are shaped like horses with crowns like gold upon their heads, faces like men, hair like women, teeth like lions and a tail like a scorpion. God gave them authority to hurt men for five months. During this time the demonic activity will be so frightful and the torment so painful that men will seek death but will not find it (vs 6).

Although avoidance of pain is in our DNA, that isn't the reason we ought to turn to Christ. The point of all of this (the Tribulation) is Christ's headship. He is in control of all realms. He is Master of the Universe and beyond. He is worthy of our willful worship and obedient lifestyle and He will make that known one way or another. What will it take for you to submit? Must you wait to see? If so, you will experience a torment that is by design meant to force your eyes upward and your knees downward. Don't wait for that day, bow to Jesus now while you still can. For those that have, be diligent with the Good News, I promise you wouldn't wish this torment on your worst enemy. Work while it's still day for the night is coming when no one will be able to work (Jn 9:4).

Father, we thank You that You are pursuant with us. Your love is far to great to keep us in the dark regarding the coming torment. For those that are Yours use this to embolden us, that we might be diligent in sharing the Gospel. For those that are not, may You open their eyes to Your great love and forgiveness. Have Your way and Your way only in us we pray in Jesus name, amen!
