Revelation 16:1–2 (ESV): "16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, "Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God. 2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image."Worship is serious business. The God of the universe is a jealous God requiring that we have no idols before us. If we bow down to another He will certainly remind us that He alone is worthy of all blessing and honor and glory. He shares His glory with no one!
In chapter 15, John sees seven angels who bring seven plagues (bowls) into the sanctuary which becomes filled with smoke and no one is allowed to enter until these bowls are poured out. The first angel pours out his bowl of God's wrath upon mankind affecting those who bear the mark of the beast and worshipped his image. Similar to the boils that came upon those in Egypt these sores are incredibly painful. People will know the source of these sores and why they are experiencing this. It's meant to wake them up and draw them in.
How easy it is to give someone or something other than God all our time and attention. That is called an idol and God won't stand for it. If we are trusting in another for provision and protection then we are worshipping an idol and God will not stand for it. We are command to have no other gods before us (Ex 20:3-4). Examine your heart and see if you have any idols in your life. They can be good and godly things that God has given us that we have turned into an idol such as a spouse, child or special relationship. It can be something material, a bank account, car, house etc. It could also be a job, ministry or gifting. Ask God to search you and know you and see if there be any wicked way in you. May our one desire be for Him and Him alone and may everything else flow from that! He alone is worthy of all blessing and honor and glory! He is worthy of this!
Father we do praise Your holy name! Who is like You oh Lord? Who can command the wind and the waves of life? You alone are sovereign King. Forgive us for bowing to another. May our hearts be centered upon You. May we give the flesh no opportunity to boast Lord. Fill us with a passion to worship You alone we pray in Jesus name, amen!
