Psalm 43:5

Psalm 43:5 (ESV): "5  Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God."

Emotions are fickle and deceitful. When we find our joy being robbed by them we must be willing to speak the truth to ourselves and remind ourselves that there is always hope and a reason to praise God!

After David's son Absalom launched an insurrection against him David was devastated. Many of his own leaders had defected and sided with his son. He asks for vindication from God and then asks the Lord, "why have you rejected me." He was depressed and downtrodden because he "felt" like God had turned His back on him. At this moment David understands what is going on within him. His emotions are playing with him. He preaches to his soul, "why are you downcast, why is their turmoil within me? Hope in God and praise Him for who He is and for the eternal salvation that He has given me that no one can take away."

Sometimes the only thing we can do is preach against our emotions. God has never left you, He is always with you. He is for you, not against you. He has a future and a hope for you. He has not allowed things in your life to harm you but to deepen your faith in Him. He always has our best interests in mind even in the most horrific situations.

Stop listening to your "heart". Listen to the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Do not let your emotions dictate to you how you should feel in hard times. Look to the Lord and let your soul be encouraged by Him. It will keep you from making huge mistakes in your walk. Preach to yourself and believe what the Word of God says!

Father, thank You for human emotion, and for the ability it gives us to experience life in color. However, help us to guard ourselves against the grave mistake of walking solely by emotion. May Your Spirit and Your Word be our sole guides in this life and may our emotions follow them. Give us the words to preach to ourselves when life doesn't feel good. May we always hope and praise You no matter what we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
