Psalm 14:2-3

Psalm 14:2–3 (ESV): "2  The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3  They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one."

Mankind is lost in a forest of deception. We call good what is evil before God. We say we seek God and yet live solely for ourselves. God is not fooled and faithful to reveal to us this deception continually.

David writes an incredibly important truth here. One that Paul refers back to in Romans 3:10-12. As David looks around he sees men saying they are good and yet acting in pure evil. He sees people saying they are seeking God but are not. What he is seeing is the deception that every person must overcome if they desire a true relationship with God. The reality that we are not good!

All humanity is desperately lost. There are no good people in this world. Only sinners who are lost and sinners who have been redeemed. All flesh is wicked and until we are delivered from the flesh we will contend with this deception. The reality is that the closer we get to Christ the more wicked we will see ourselves. That is why Paul said at the end of his life, "I am the chief of all sinners. (1 Tim 1:15)"

Are you thankful God is honest with us? He addresses the narcissist within. He doesn't want anyone thinking they can stand before God on their own or that they have arrived spiritually in this life. He sent His Son to pay the price for our sin and reveal the reality of our hearts.

God loves you as you are. You don't need to put on a front for Him. Come to the conclusion today that Jesus Christ is the only good that is in you. Let Gods Spirit transform you but don't ever think for a moment you've arrived. Be as desperate for Jesus today as you were when you first heard the Gospel and believed. It's the truth that sets us free!

Father, how wonderful it is to know that although we are desperately wicked You are good and You desire to redeem us from sin and death. We praise You for telling us the truth and for acting on our behalf through Your Son. Help us to live in the light and not deceive ourselves into thinking we are more than we are. You alone are good and it's only You that makes us good. May we stand firm in the truth that Jesus is the only thing we have going for us but in Him we have everything. Thank You, Lord, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
