Psalm 116:15 (ESV): "15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."
There is nothing less precious in our eyes than to experience a Christian loved one pass away even though we know they are going to heaven. However, to God, it is precious because He has been separated from us physically all of our lives. It's a welcome home party for Him.
Many ascribe this psalm to Hezekiah after God added fifteen years to his life due to his prayer for mercy (2 Kgs 20). It's interesting that although Hezekiah didn't want to die he understood the reality of death for the saint from God's point of view. The death of a saint is precious in God's eyes for it is a long-awaited homecoming.
Death to us is separation from our loved one but the death of the saint to God is a deeper level of closeness where we will finally be in His presence physically. We will actually see the Father enthroned and the Son sitting at His right hand. The death of the saint is precious to God also because He knows the reality of what that means for us. No more flesh and struggling. No more wanting to do the right thing and yet failing. He knows we will finally be in a perfect state. For the same reasons God finds no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ez 33:11) for He knows their reality.
Perspective is important for us when dealing with death. For our Christian loved ones, it is honestly the best thing that can happen to them because it transports them from this life to the next. They will be completely set free once and for all. Yes we will miss them but we haven't lost them, we know exactly where they are...they are in heaven where we long to be, and if we are in Christ we will be with them again for all of eternity. May God give us His perspective relating to the death of His saints.
Father, we thank You for loving us the way you do, for giving us hope beyond the grave and comfort when our loved ones go home to be with You. Will You help us to understand the reality of death for the saint, that we might be able to rejoice knowing that they are in perfection. Heal the hurt in our hearts that accompanies death and give us Your heart and understanding we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
