Proverbs 23:17-18

Proverbs 23:17–18 (ESV): "17  Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day. 18  Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off."

Fearing God and living for Him is the best life we could possibly live. Don't be fooled by the appearance of fun. Sin will only yield one type of fruit, that is the fruit of death (Ro 6:23).

To fear God means to revere Him and live for Him not because you are afraid of the consequences of not doing this but because you love Him and don't want to defame Him. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom, it is pure and right and will help us avoid evil. The word of God promises blessings for those who fear the Lord (Pro 28:14).

Don't look around at the world longing for its delicacies. They will not satisfy and in the end, will leave you hurting and devastated. Sin is fun for a season but it will not be kind to you for it's only end is destruction. As the psalmist said in Psalm 73:2–3 (ESV): "2  But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. 3  For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked." He quickly realized that he was being fooled by his feelings for he goes on to say in vs 17, "until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end (Ps 73:17)." Their end is eternal damnation. Yikes! Live for the Lord and don't long for the world. It has nothing for you but harm and heartache.

Father, we thank You for revealing the truth to us over and over again. It never gets old. Keep our hearts souled out to You. Let us never become disenchanted with the Christian life that we long for the life You saved us from. Let us never have the heart of Lot's wife where we look back at the world with longing. Help us to continually love and fear You. May we grow continually in both all the days of our lives we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
