Proverbs 14:14 (ESV): "14 The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways, and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways."
Just as you can tell a tree by its fruit so too can you tell a person by their fruit. If they are good their life will reflect it, and if they are bad they will not be able to hide it.
The backslider is someone who is disloyal to the Lord, who turns away from Him to pursue the things of the world. This heart condition will be revealed by the fruit of a person's life. They will not display godliness but only fleshly fruit. Those who are good in heart, who are walking with the Lord in faithfulness will see the fruit of their condition as well. They will display good fruit in their lives.
Jesus said it like this is in Matthew 7:15–20 (ESV): "15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits."
We can know where people are by looking at the fruit of their life. The determiner will be who you are following. Follow the Lord and be a person who displays good fruit. Obey His commands and your life will reflect the fruit of righteousness. Don't backslide and follow the world. It will yield nasty fruit in your life. Give yourself wholly and only to God and watch the fruit of that decision yield lasting reward.
Father, we thank You for reminding us continually that the fruit in our lives tells the story of the condition of our hearts. Protect us from backsliding. We are all just one decision away from being wayward. Guide us through the deception of this life that we may display good fruit as a result of following You all the days of our lives we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
