Matthew 17:25–27 (ESV): And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?" 26 And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."
When the world asks for something from the children of God, we have no obligations to oblige because sons are free. However, for the sake of witness, we oblige (as long as it is not in violation of Scripture) to not offend them.
After Jesus had cast out a demon and revealed His death and resurrection to His disciples, Peter was asked by some tax collectors if Jesus paid taxes. Peter then asked Jesus about it. He replied to him with a question; "From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or others?" Peter said, "others" to which Jesus replied, "tru dat P-dog, sons are free." Then Jesus said something strange, "However, not to give offense, go to the sea and catch a fish and take the money from its mouth and pay both of our taxes." Even though Rabbis we're exempt from the tax, Jesus paid it anyways!
Let that sink in Christian. Jesus paid the tax even though He was not liable for it. He did it to not offend the rulers of this world. Jesus complied with the laws of the land even when He didn't have to for the sake of His witness. Don't get away with what you can, be a good witness for Christ! Go above and beyond to let the world know the character of our great God and King, amen?
Father, we thank You that we are free as Your kids. This world has no authority over us except that which You have given it. May we represent You as we await Your return we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
