Mark 14:41-42

Mark 14:41–42 (ESV): "41 And he came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

As a parent, I can appreciate Jesus waking His kids up before He goes to work. As a servant I think, "Shouldn't I be awake and ready to work with Him?" Jesus wants our participation with the things He is doing in this world!

The night of His betrayal Jesus prepared Himself for the Cross. Coming to the Garden of Gethsemane He prayed and asked the Father "if it were possible" that this hour might pass from Him but that the Fathers will be done regardless. At the same time, He asked the disciples to pray with Him. Twice He came back to wake them up and the third time He said, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come." Jesus was preparing to clock in for work and wanted His disciples to pray and be prepared for what they were about to witness so that they didn't get discouraged by the temporary departure of their Lord.

I don't think much has changed. Jesus is still desiring for His disciples to pray and be watchful. He wants us to witness His mighty work in this world and wants us to participate in it. We can't do that if we are asleep. It's time to wake up children and go to work for the day is near when Jesus will come again. May not find us asleep on the job, amen?

Father, we thank You for giving us the strength and endurance to remain awake until you come. The Spirit is willing and yet the flesh is weak. May we partner with You in these last days and make the Gospel known to all the world that we might become eyewitnesses of Your redeeming work in Jesus' name we pray, amen.
