Mark 14:29-31

Mark 14:29–31 (ESV): "29 Peter said to him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not." 30 And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." 31 But he said emphatically, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." And they all said the same."

Self-will and determination will never be enough to keep someone from falling away from Jesus. We need the Holy Spirit's strength and determination to remain in Him. Don't make the mistake of depending on yourself to follow Jesus, you will fail.

On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, Jesus sent His disciples ahead to prepare for the Last Supper. During the meal, He told them one of them would betray Him. They all became sorrowful and said one by one, "Is it I?"

After they finished eating they went to the Mount of Olives and Jesus said, "You will all fall away, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered." Peter proclaimed, "not I Lord", to which Jesus said, "before the rooster crows twice you will deny Me three times." Peter, along with all the disciples, then proclaimed, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you."

The natural man has no power against sin and temptation. If we depend on ourselves to stay faithful to the Lord we are destined to fail. The disciples at this point didn't have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit so they stood no chance but true believers have the Spirit of God and if relying on Him will not deny the Lord. All of these men (excluding Judas) went on to die for Jesus' sake except John who was preserved from death by persecution. Rely on the Holy Spirit and you will never deny Jesus, amen?

Father, we are incredibly thankful to You for giving us the means to be forgiven and the ability to walk in faithfulness. Help us to rely on Your strength and power and never our own all the days of our lives we pray in Jesus name, amen.
