Malachi 4:5–6 (ESV): "5 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."

The last words of someone are often the most important. Here we find the very last words of God to the people of the Old Covenant and they contain both a promise of restoration and a threat of destruction. It is meant to draw the hearts of men to obedience to the Word of God.

Malachi comes to a close with the promise of Elijah's return. Elijah ministered during a time when Israel was far from God. He demonstrated the power and purity of God to turn the hearts of the people back to Him. During the Passover, many Jews set a place at the table for Elijah to come for they understand that he is the forerunner to the Messiah yet they missed the fact that John the Baptist operated in the spirit of Elijah who was the forerunner to Christ. When Elijah comes in the Tribulation Period (Rev 11) it will be as a forerunner to the Second Coming of Christ!

Sadly, the Old Testament ends with a curse. However, the New Testament ends with the blessing of the grace of the Lord Jesus! Praise God for the New Covenant. It is wrought with grace and peace. Don't miss the signs being displayed before you Christian. Time is short, the return of Christ is near. May you be about His business and make your focus about furthering His Kingdom for nothing else will translate into eternity. Live for the Lord, amen?
