Malachi 3:8–10 (ESV): "8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need."
There is a circle of blessing and cursing associated with tithes and offerings. God doesn't need or want your money but your heart. When you give you are being obedient and that is what God cares about. Give cheerfully Christian for the Lord loves a cheerful giver.
God speaks a painful truth to those in Judah here through Malachi. They were being poor stewards of God's possessions. Everything they owned was His and He only asked that they give ten percent as a tithe to care for the Levites and others in need. God goes on to say "I will not bless disobedience." Those who are obedient will however be blessed tremendously. God will open up the window of heaven and pour down blessings upon those who obey Him.
The New Testament giving mandate isn't about a number but an attitude of the heart. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 9:6–7 (ESV): whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Make sure you are giving like this Christian! Amen?
Father, we thank You that You are a giving God! You gave the ultimate gift to us, Your Son. May we steward Your resources well and give as You lead us to give, not for the blessing but out of obedience. Keep us free from the love of money we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
