Luke 18:18

Luke 18:18 (ESV): 18 And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

The greatest misconception in the world today is that man can "do" good enough to inherit eternal life. The reality is that the works of man will only result in judgment because man has a heart problem. Even in good works sin is present. There is only one way to inherit eternal life, it's by grace, through faith, in Christ alone!

Jesus was asked all kinds of questions but none as important as this one, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" The answer is simple but hard to accept. There is nothing a person can "do" to inherit eternity. Eternal life can only come by reckless abandonment of self and total trust in the works of Jesus Himself. Only in this can we find true salvation.

What area of self are you trusting in to gain eternal security? You can't give enough money, feed enough homeless people, serve enough in the local church to gain eternal life. Stop looking within to provide something that can only be provided through the works of someone else. Our salvation is not linked to what we can "do" but to what Jesus has done. Go sell all that you have, abandon whatever it is that is giving you some false sense of security, and put all your eternal eggs in Jesus' basket. He is the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Him (Jn 14:6).

Father, how easy it is for us to slip into a working mentality. As if we can by self means please you more with our works than the works of Jesus. Forgive us if we have fallen into this mentality. May we trust in no one else but Your Son alone to deliver us from this life to the next securely and safely we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
