Luke 13:34

Luke 13:34 (ESV): "34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!"

Students of the Word of God get it wrong sometimes. We study and consider to find understanding but sometimes our conclusions are wrong. Jesus wants us to be sure about what we know but not so sure that if He were to correct us we would receive it and not reject it.

The Jews were the most studied people in all the world relating to the one and true living God. They had the law and the prophets and yet somehow they missed the Messiah. He didn't fit THEIR theology. The religious leaders killed anyone who went against their teaching. Jesus came at the right time, in the right way, through the right parents and they refused to believe He was the Messiah. He longed to show them the truth but they were not willing to receive it!

Like the Religious Leaders, we too can be so sure about our Biblical understanding that we are not open to even Jesus correcting us. We need to read the Word with an open mind and heart always, asking the Lord to correct anything we believe amiss. He is faithful to teach and show us but we must be willing to receive it. Know what you know and hold fast to what Jesus reveals to you but never become so arrogant as to think you have it all correct. Pray and seek truth with a humble spirit. Amen?

Father, we thank You for being faithful to teaching us the truth. Your Spirit will lead us into all truth if we let Him. Help us to read the Bible with spiritual eyes while maintaining a sponge-like heart that is flexible and willing to yield to Your voice we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
