Luke 12:35

Luke 12:35 (ESV): "35 "Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning..."

Being ready for the Bridegroom to come is an important aspect of the Christian walk. We are to "stay awake at all times, praying that we may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man (Lk 21:36)."

The traditional Jewish wedding was a fascinating event. Through arrangement, the father of the bridegroom would choose a wife and they would be betrothed, which was a legally binding ceremony. During which a dowry was presented and a cup of wine was poured. If the bride-to-be drank of the cup she would be accepting the proposal. After the acceptance, the bridegroom would then shower her with gifts and declare just before leaving, "I am going to prepare a place for you ", and  "I will return for you when it is ready." He would not drink of the vine again until they were together.

As he returned to his father's house he would build a room for her that his father must approve of before he could go get his bride. If asked the date of his wedding he would reply, "Only my father knows." When the room was ready he would come for her thus she was to be ready.   It was the custom for a bride to keep a lamp, her veil, and her other things next to her bed.   Her bridesmaids were also waiting and had to have oil ready for their lamps. When the bridegroom and his friends got close to the bride's house they would shout and blow a shofar to let her know to be ready.

When the wedding party arrived at father's house the newlyweds went into the room prepared for a seven-day honeymoon and the best man stood outside waiting for the bridegroom to tell him that the marriage was consummated evidenced by a blood spotted bedsheet. It represented the purity of the bride. All the while the families and friends celebrated for seven days. What a picture this is for the Bride of Christ. He has gone to prepare a place for us. Our job is to stay dressed for action and keep our lamps burning. He is coming quickly, be ready. Amen?

Father, thank You for this amazing picture we have of Your unending love for us. May we be watchful and ready for the coming of the Bridegroom and not grow weary in the waiting we pray in Jesus name, amen.
