Leviticus 25:35-38

Leviticus 25:35–38 (ESV): "35 "If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. 36 Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you. 37 You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God."

The world takes advantage of those who are poor and in need. God's people are to be generous and gracious never taking advantage of those who have fallen on hard times.

God communicates to Moses that when a fellow Israelite is unable to support themselves it's the duty of the Israelites to take care of them at zero charge. This principle applied even to those who were sojourners and aliens although God permitted the lender to charge them interest (Deut 23:20). It was God's social system for the day.Did people take advantage of it?I'm sure they did.Did that fact negate the command?Nope!

In Acts 2 believers were applying this principle as they had everything in common. This is a direct fulfillment of the command found in our text.We need to help our brothers and sisters, no strings attached.Secondly, we need to help those outside of our faith. It's been said that if the church acted like this world hunger wouldn't exist. We don't have to give everything we have away but we should be generous both to those inside and outside the church.Know that people will take advantage of God's people and thus we need to use discernment but that should never deter us from being generous to everyone.Ask God to give You His heart towards others and you will become the generous giver you are called to be.

Father, we thank You for the incredible call You have given us to be generous people. It's a task above our own earthly abilities and so we ask that You fill us with Your Spirit and remove the hardness of our hearts replacing our greed with generosity.Help us to use every resource we've been given to reveal Your heart to everyone we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
