Lamentations 3:40–42 (ESV): "40 Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord! 41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven: 42 "We have transgressed and rebelled, and you have not forgiven."
In God's system, the way up is by bowing down. He doesn't exalt the proud and unrepentant, only the humble and repentant are exalted. If you want to be blessed by God you must humbly repentant and walk in obedience to Him.
As the writer of Lamentations continues to describe his present-day condition he brings up a very important subject, self-examination, and repentance. If God's people want to see Him move on their behalf they must examine their hearts and repent of any sin they find. That is what he means by saying, "return to the Lord." The forgiveness of God is available to all but it is only accessed by bowing down. One must return to God who sent His Son to redeem us if you desire to receive the blessing of the Gospel.
Self-examination takes time and effort. There are so many ways we can sin and so we must take time as part of our everyday life routine to examine our hearts to see if we are harboring any sin. Ask God to reveal anything that offends Him so you can repent and return to Him. The best part is that no matter how miserably we have failed God is willing to forgive and forget, all we have to do is ask. The only way up in God's world is to bow low. Take time daily to examine your heart, amen?
Father, thank You for moving visibly and noticeably in our lives. Thank You for revealing things in our hearts that need to be removed. Sin is like cancer and we can't afford to allow it to inhabit our lives. Search us and know us, Lord. Reveal any wickedness in us that we might repent and return to You. Help us carve out time daily to examine our hearts and repent of anything that is not of You we pray in Jesus name, amen.
