Lamentations 3:31-33

Lamentations 3:31–33 (ESV): "31  For the Lord will not cast off forever, 32  but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; 33  for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men."

God's heart for man is blessing and abundant life. He has compassion for us when we mess up. He by no means finds pleasure in disciplining us but He knows that we can never become who He envisions us to be without it. Talk about being compassionate.

The writer expresses to us the true heart of the Father regarding discipline. He does not enjoy afflicting us or causing grief in our lives. He does so out of compassion for us. He "cast us off" for some time so we can learn the lesson but is right there to hold us when we return to Him. This is true love!

The question has been asked countless times, "God, why are you doing this to me?" His purpose in chastisement is clear, God disciplines those whom He loves (Heb 12:6). If you are currently bring afflicted know that God isn't mad at you but madly in love with you. He is doing what He is doing because that is the loving thing to do. He has so much compassion for you that He can't bear to leave you in a place of despair. Run to Him, not from Him. He longs to see you restored in His arms. Come, repent and return and you will find forgiveness and restoration. That is all God is after. Amen?

Father, thank You for loving us as You do. Where would we be if You had never disciplined us? How wayward would we have gone had You not intervened. Thank You for being compassionate and kind that You would cause grief in our lives to get our attention. We surrender to You oh Lord. Have our hearts completely we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
