Judges 11:29-31

Judges 11:29–31 (ESV): 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, "If you will give the Ammonites into my hand, 31 then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering."

The greatest sign of commitment is found in doing what we say we are going to do. God demonstrates His commitment to us in this way, the question is do we do the same in return?

Jephthah was the son of a prostitute mother to his father Gilead. He was the black sheep of the family and rejected by his brothers, removing him from the inheritance because of his scandalous background. He was, however, a mighty warrior and thus when trouble came to the Gileadites they called upon Jephthah to deliver them. They said if you will save us from the Ammonites we will follow you, to which Jephthah accepted. He said, "if the Lord delivers the Ammonites into my hand I will be your leader."

Jephthah would go on to make a vow to the Lord saying that if God delivered the Ammonites into his hand he would offer the first thing that came out his door as a burnt offering to the Lord. The Lord then delivers the Ammonites into his hand and upon his return home the first thing that comes out of his door was his daughter. It was a shock no doubt but Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and as Jesus said the vows we make we must keep (Matt 5:33).

It's uncertain if Jephthah truly killed his daughter or if he put her away in solitude but what is clear is his commitment to God. He did what he vowed to do. That is what total commitment looks like. No matter how difficult it might be and how much it might cost, we must remain committed to God. If you have not kept your word to the Lord, repent and then moving forward keep it. Demonstrate your commitment by doing what you say no matter the cost.

Father, we thank You for being so committed to us. Although the cost was great You have delivered us by grace through faith through Your Son. You kept Your word in Genesis 3:15 and sent the Redeemer of mankind. Let us demonstrate our commitment to You by being faithful to the things we vow to You. Keep our hearts committed we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
