Jonah 4:6-8

Jonah 4:6–8 (ESV): “Now the Lord God appointed a plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. 7 But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. And he asked that he might die and said, "It is better for me to die than to live.""

Trials and difficulties are not always fun but they are beneficial.  Everything that comes in our lives is either allowed or appointed by God for the purpose of making us more like Jesus.

Take Jonah for example, he had a disobedient heart and because of that God appointed a great fish to swallow him up.  Then God appointed Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach repentance.  After this he went outside the city and sulked in his sorrows because the people or Nineveh were saved.  So the God appointed the sun to bear down on him, then appointed a plant to grow up next to him to provide shade but that didn't change his heart so then God appointed a worm to eat the plant.  Then God appointed a scorching east wind to blow.  Jonah at this point just wanted to die.  God was teaching him a lesson about compassion.  We ought to have pity on people who are perishing rather than having pity upon ourselves for the various trials we encounter.

God has appointed things in your life to teach you important lessons.  Don't get angry, learn the lesson so the Lord can appoint you to better things. God is simply looking for a changed heart.  God is faithful to make us more like Jesus.  Don't be surprised when you encounter a trial or difficulty because it's in them that He is shaping you (James 1:2-4).

Father, we thank You for the appointments we have been given in life for they make us more like Jesus.  May we be quick to obey and glorify You so You can appoint us to bigger and better things.  Our hearts belong to You, have Your way in Jesus name, amen!
