Jonah 3:1–2 (ESV): "Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you."
First-time obedience is what we teach our children. We tell them, do it right away, all the way, with a happy heart. That is God's expectation for us as well!
Jonah disobeyed the call of God on his life to go preach to Nineveh. He had his reasons I am sure but none of them were valid. God didn't ask Jonah to weigh in on the decision to go. He told him to go and he refused. So Jonah got to know the belly of a fish intimately which changed his mind a bit. Now God speaks to him a second time, "Go to Nineveh and preach the message I tell you."
God should only have to speak to us once. He shouldn't have to repeat Himself and yet He is gracious and will at times but not until He puts us through a bit of difficulty. As Jesus said to Paul, "isn't it hard to kick against the goads" so to the Lord says to us when we are disobedient. Rather than complain and whine about His call, do it right away, all the way, with a happy heart and all will go well, amen?
Father, You truly are a good, good Father. We thank You for being gracious to us when we walk in willful disobedience. May we do what You ask of us and strive to never make You ask us more than once. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
