John 2:23–25 (ESV): "23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man."
Our world is full of fake approval. Someone can go viral and become an immediate influencer and as quickly as they rise they will fall because the heart of man is wicked and deceitful. Jesus never fed into the culture and didn't take the momentary approval of man to heart because He knows man and man is fickle. The crucifixion scene is our proof!
Jesus became an instant success in Jerusalem when He began performing miracles. The fanfare was unbelievable but Jesus never entrusted Himself to these people because they were operating in superficial faith. He can see right through the facade of man. They were astonished by His works, not His person. The moment the works go away, the people do too! He still loved these people but He did not give Himself over to them for He knew what was in their hearts.
Beware when people speak kindly of you for more times than not it's a trap. The age-old adage of "believing the PR" of others is a sure way to get off track. Love people but know people as Jesus did. You aren't called to entrust yourself to fake folks. Love on them, yes; minister to them, of course; but do not entrust yourself to people who only want to be around you for what you can give them. Be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove. Amen?
Father, we thank You for the thoroughness of Your Word. It speaks into every aspect of life. We need not look outside of it for wisdom to live godly lives. Give us discernment on how who we entrust ourselves to that we might not fall into the trap of the enemy we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
