John 19:33–34 (ESV): "33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water."
He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our sin, the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, by His wounds we are healed!
Normally a crucifixion would last for days. Those who were pinned to the tree would hang their until they suffocated to death which could take days. Jesus gave up His Spirit within hours of being on the cross. The other two that were crucified with Him were still alive and thus their legs were broken and they died quickly. It was nearing the Sabbath and the Jews didn't want to see their handiwork hanging before them. When the soldiers came to Jesus they pierced His side to confirm His death and water and blood gushed forth. There is a medical condition where by the heart bursts and the sac surrounding the heart that normally has a watery substance in it is mixed with blood from the heart. That is what happened to Jesus and thus it's been said that Jesus died of a broken heart.
The water and the blood signify the complete cleansing of our sin.In the Old Testament both water and blood were part of the cleansing process. Through ceremonial washings in water a person would be considered clean and also through the sacrificial offering of animals and the shedding of their blood one would be clean. Jesus made you and I completely clean before the Father through His own body, by the water and the blood we are totally clean. By faith you are forgiven and complete in Christ. Let us never forget the water and the blood that flowed from His side to cover and cleanse us from our sin.
Father thank You for offering complete and total cleansing from our sin through the sacrifice of Your Son. May the water and blood be on our minds as we walk through this life and may it make a difference in how we live. Let us be reminded we are forgiven and clean before You so let us live in that holiness provided and bring loads of glory to You in Jesus name, amen!
