John 19:23-24

John 19:23–24 (ESV): "23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be."

When we say a person is willing to do anything to help someone we say "they would give the shirt off their back." Jesus gave us the shirt off His back literally! Thus no one can ever say "no one has done anything for me!"

When Jesus was crucified, the Roman soldiers divided His garments into four parts, one part for each soldier, and also His tunic. It was woven from top to bottom so rather than tear it, they cast lots to see who would get to keep it. That means that Jesus was crucified possibly naked but more probably with only a loincloth covering Him. Talk about humiliating. He was made a public spectacle. Jesus gave more than just the shirt off His back, He gave every ounce of dignity and material possessions He had to save wretched sinners.

Are you willing to follow Jesus in self-sacrifice to see others come to know Him? What are you currently giving up for the sake of others? The acrostic J.O.Y. stands for Jesus, Others, Yourself. We ought to live our lives in that order. That means we ought to be willing to give up every last bit of dignity and material possessions for the sake of others as well. It's not wrong to have stuff as long as you keep a loose grip on it. The Lord may one day need it! Be willing to give all for the sake of others just as Jesus was, amen?

Father, we thank You for giving us Your Son. Not only was Jesus willing to give all that He had but so were You. May we be willing to do the same. Lead us by Your Spirit we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
