Job 28:28

Job 28:28 (ESV): "28  And he said to man, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.' "

Wisdom and understanding go hand in hand and are only obtainable through a proper fear of the Lord. When this is lacking foolishness and evil will prevail.

Job summarizes his defense with his friends by declaring the need for wisdom and understanding. He asks the question, "from where, then, does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?" He goes on to say "God understands the way to it, and he knows it's place." Job declares that man cannot find wisdom or understanding any other place except through God and it is obtainable by way of fearing Him!

The psalmist wrote in Psalm 111:10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding." so what does it mean to fear God? It means to revere Him above life itself, not religiously but relationally. Just as a child would "fear" his or her parents and want to keep their instruction and walk in a way that would please them, so too must the Christian revere the Lord. That is when our journey to holiness begins! When God is what we are living for...its the only way to obtain wisdom from above!

Do you feel lost today? Do you feel like you lack wisdom in your daily life? Are you struggling with evil ways? Fear God and you will have the wisdom you seek. He will give you the understanding you need. Just as Daniel feared God and refused to defile himself with the king's delicacies (Dan 1:8) and the Lord gave him wisdom and understanding, so too will the Lord give you the same when you properly fear Him. Don't try harder, trust in Him alone to provide what you need. God is the answer to all of life's problems. Seek Him, fear Him, and He will show Himself strong in your life.

Father, how good You are to us. We have wandered and gone astray and yet Your loving hand is constantly at work to draw us back. Thank You for being so long-suffering towards us. Help us to respond with a proper fear of You. May our hearts bow low all the days of our lives and may we obtain the wisdom and understanding we need to accomplish Your will in our lives we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
