Jeremiah 42:1–3 (ESV): "Then all the commanders of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near 2 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, "Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the Lord your God for us, for all this remnant—because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— 3 that the Lord your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do."
Difficulties provide man the opportunity to see if they truly trust the Lord or not. You can't follow your own plan and call it trust. Authentic trust manifests itself in surrender to the will of God no matter the consequence.
After the Babylonians had captured Judah a remnant of people was left in the land. This remnant had planned to seek refuge in Egypt but first asked Jeremiah to inquire of the Lord. They said they would trust God's word and be careful to do all that He said. When Jeremiah came back and told them the Lord said "do not go to Egypt but remain in the land and you will not die." Some called Jeremiah a liar (Jer 43:2) and disobeyed the voice of God. They would end up dying in Egypt as a result (Jer 46).
Have you ever done this before? You say, "I want to trust the Lord with this circumstance" and then you inquire of Him for direction, and when you hear something you don't like you completely reject what He says? If you trust God you will follow Him no matter where He takes you. Don't fool yourself into thinking God won't put difficulties in your path! They are meant to refine you and reveal your true level of trust in Him. Reckon the old man dead and follow His voice. This is where safety and protection are. Truly trust Him through it all and you will come out blessed beyond measure. Amen?
Father, You alone are worthy to be worshipped. You alone are deserving of our heart's full trust. Forgive us for not trusting You at times. May we learn the lesson that Your ways are better. Give us faith and boldness to follow You through the valley as well on the mountain top. May we find rest even in our worries as we trust in You all the days of our lives we pray in Jesus name, amen!
