Jeremiah 35:18-19

Jeremiah 35:18–19 (ESV): 18 But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, "Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man to stand before me."

Obedience is better than sacrifice. In other words, it is better to resist sin than to give in to it and then repent. There is a great reward for those who walk in obedience to God. I dare you to try it.

The Rechabites were descendants of Rechab (a Kenite) and relatives of Moses by marriage. They were a nomadic people who lived in strict obedience to the commands given by Jonadab the son of Rechab that they should abstain from wine, from building houses, from sowing seed, and from planting vineyards (Jeremiah 35:6–7). The Rechabites were faithful to abide by these rules through the generations, all the way from the time of Jehu (2 Kings 10:15) to the time of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 35:8–10)—over 200 years. When Babylon came upon the land they fled to Jerusalem for refuge. God uses their obedience as an illustration to the people of Judah of the blessings that come from obedience. Had Israel remained obedient like the Rechabites they would not be facing the Babylonians.

God doesn't want us to obey because He wants to control us but bless us. When you tell your child not to play in the street it isn't because you are trying to control them but protect them. You want them to live a long life. Obedience produces blessings! If you find yourself in disobedience to God today the beautiful thing is you can repent, turn away from your disobedience, ask God for forgiveness and then walk rightly before Him. He will bless you if you do this.

Gods word to the people of Judah was as follows: "I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered. (Jer 35:17)" The principle applies to us as well, obedience produces blessings. Choose obedience today. Walk faithfully before the Lord and you will experience incredible blessings from God! Amen?

Father, we thank You for the instruction in Your Word that tells us to trust and obey! Change our rebellious hearts and help us to see that Your commands are meant to bless us not curse us. You desire the very best for us and have shown us how to achieve it. All we have to do is obey! May we surrender our will to Yours and choose to walk in obedience to You this day we pray in Jesus name, amen.
