Jeremiah 21:8-10

Jeremiah 21:8–10 (ESV): "8 "And to this people you shall say: 'Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you shall live and shall have his life as a prize of war. 10 For I have set my face against this city for harm and not for good, declares the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.'"

When God is chastising it's best not to resist His discipline for it only gets worse for those who fight against Him. The better route is to surrender yourself to Him and take ownership of your sin so the healing process can begin. He gives grace to the humble and humbles those who resist His grace!

When Zedekiah king of Judah sent messengers to Jeremiah to make inquiry of the Lord regarding the intentions of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon God spoke clearly that if they resist this captivity God Himself would fight against them and would bring them all down with pestilence. Hum...seems like no matter what...the people of Judah were going to face some chastisement for their sinful ways. God gave them a choice here, surrender, and live or fight against Me and die by My hand.

It's an interesting word given to Zedekiah, for we as a country are in a similar spot. We have gone astray and served many other gods, forsaking the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob and now we are faced with the consequences of our sin. We need to make inquiry of the Lord before we begin to resist His chastisement for if this is a judgment upon our land no one can stop it. What is important to note is that God is in total control! Nothing that will transpire will occur without His approval. He is using these current circumstances to humble His church. We have a choice, surrender ourselves and plead for His mercy or fight against Him and risk making things far worse for ourselves. What will you choose today Christian? Will you surrender yourself to the Lord and bank on His mercy or will you go down fighting? The choice is yours. Pray before you act!

Father, we thank You that nothing that transpires in this life is outside of Your control. You cause the sun to rise and set every day. You set the boundaries for the ocean and seas. All things are held together by You! Help Your people to know how to respond to the current issues occurring in our country. If this is chastisement let us not resist it. If it's an attack from the enemy then make that known. Regardless our response should be the same! We surrender our hearts to You and we ask for Your mercy. Be gracious to us Oh Lord. Forgive us for going astray. We humble ourselves before You even now. Have Your way, whatever that looks like, we pray in Jesus name, amen.
