Isaiah 7:9b;14 (ESV): "If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all...14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."
When we look to that which is seen rather than trusting in the promises of God we will put ourselves through undue stress and worry. When we trust God and take Him at His word we will remain in perfect peace no matter what is going on around us.
Isaiah was sent by God to King Ahaz of Judah who was attempting to make a peace treaty with Syria because of their threats to come with Israel and stomp out Judah. Rather than look to God and trust in Him Ahaz was trying barter with Rezin the king of Syria. Isaiah told him that God was with him and he could ask for a sign but he said, "I will not ask for a sign and put the Lord to the test." What he meant to say was, "I have this handled, I'm gonna do it my way." God responded with the sign of a son born of a virgin. He shall be called (not named) Emmanuel, God with us!
God provides us promises so that when times look hopeless we have something to hope in. He has a plan that is being worked out daily and sometimes that plan doesn't look hopeful from our perspective. We must walk by faith and trust in His promises. He told King Ahaz and all future generations to be looking for Jesus. He is our ultimate deliverer. God tells us here how He will come, through the womb of a virgin. Without faith, it's impossible to believe this and yet it would happen regardless if we believe.
God wants to give us peace today amid our troubles. We might not be comfortable with what we see but we can trust in the promise that Jesus is coming to get us. He said I will not leave you as orphans! He is coming back for us and the things transpiring before us are all part of the plan. Have faith and believe in the signs...Jesus is coming soon. You can bet on that. Amen?
Father, we thank You for being faithful when we are faithless. Thank You for giving us an understanding of things to come and promises to hold on to. May we never let what we see deter us from trusting in what You've said. Increase our faith to trust You no matter what we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
