Isaiah 50:11 (ESV): "11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who equip yourselves with burning torches! Walk by the light of your fire, and by the torches that you have kindled! This you have from my hand:you shall lie down in torment."
We cannot walk in our own will and power and expect God to be pleased. He is only pleased with us when we are walking in the completed work of His Son. Don't kindle a fire made up of your own works for it will only end up burning you.
Isaiah 50 declares a horrific picture of the fire Jesus walked through on our behalf. He gave His back to those who would strike Him, His cheeks to those who would pull out His beard. He hid not His face from those who would disgrace and spit on Him (Isa 50:6-7). We are to be hidden in Him. Anything else is offering strange fire as Nadab and Abihu did (Num 10:1). Walk by the Light of the World who has gone through the fire for you.
Are you working your way to God or resting in the finished work of Christ? A good way to know is by asking yourself why you are doing what you are doing. Do you read your Bible so that God will take notice or because you sincerely desire to know Him more? Do you go to church to be marked "present" by the record keeper of heaven, or do you attend in obedience to the Scriptures bringing your sacrifice of praise before the Lord? Ask yourself today, am I depending on my own works to please God or am I resting in Christ doing all that I do for His glory? Offer no strange fire before the Lord, rest in the works of Christ and walk in His ways and God will be pleased with you. Amen?
Father, thank You for Your Word that instructs us so clearly and beautifully. Help us as we examine our hearts today and ask the question, "why am I doing what I am doing." Reveal to us if we are offering strange fire to you by resting in the works of our flesh. May we rest only in the finished work of Jesus in whose name we pray, Amen and amen!
