Isaiah 1:4

Isaiah 1:4 (ESV): "4  Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.

Prosperity is a dangerous blessing for the human heart to handle. When a nation becomes prosperous it can become self-sufficient, prideful, and rebellious against all authority. The answer to staying humble is found in recognizing where the blessings come from and what He wants it to be used for.

The opening lines in the book of Isaiah seem very familiar to what we are experiencing as a nation. Vs 2 says "Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me." Israel was experiencing incredible prosperity at the time Isaiah surfaces and they were letting that go to their heads. They were forsaking God and turning to demons in the form of idols. Isaiah likens them to the prosperous kingdoms of Sodom and Gomorrah. Ezekiel says they were judged for their pride, excessive and luxurious lifestyle, and prosperous ease while lacking compassion towards the poor (Ez 16:49).

The United States of America has fallen subject to the same snare that every other prosperous nation has experienced. We are forsaking God as a nation, the One who has blessed us with all that we have. While we are not Israel we have followed in her footsteps and forsaken God for demonic idols. Like Isaiah who was called and sent to be a voice crying out to those who have gone astray and don't want to hear a message of repentance, so too are we as His church called to preach the Gospel even if no one is listening.

Be faithful to the Commission God has given you Christian. I'm sure Isaiah was weary of his words falling on deaf ears but he wasn't tasked with changing people but sharing the message of repentance. You can't change anyone but the Gospel can so keep sharing it even when it feels like no one is listening. Pray for our nation that we repent and turn back to the God who has blessed us with eternal life through the giving of His Son and every other blessing we have received. Amen?

Father, we thank You that You give us time and opportunity to return to You when we go astray. We pray for the citizens of America that You stir every heart to return to You. We have lost our way as a nation and have forsaken You. Have mercy on us oh God. Do whatever it takes to bring us to our knees that our nation may truly be full of followers of Christ we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
