Habakkuk 2:4

Habakkuk 2:4 (ESV): "Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

David Guzik records a story about a man that came up to John Bunyan after a sermon and told him what a fine sermon he preached. "You're too late," Bunyan answered. "The devil told me that before I stepped down from the pulpit."  Pride is something we must all be aware of, believer and unbeliever alike, for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Habakkuk couldn't understand how God could use the wicked nation of Babylon to judge a "less" wicked people of Judah.  He struggled to see how God could use a nation that had zero concern for justice and righteousness for His purposes.  We can wonder the same when we consider rulers of nations that were appointed by God (Romans 13:2) who do wicked acts.  As the Psalmist reminds us "The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble" - Proverbs 16:4.  God can and will use everything for His purposes. He is sovereign and thus can do this.

Habakkuk came to the realization that he must walk by faith and not by sight.  Anyone who desires to walk in humility must walk by faith.  Faith cause us to rely not upon ourselves but upon someone else.  It's by faith we are saved! Our righteousness is totally based on faith in Jesus and not upon ourselves.  If you're struggling with pride today it is because you aren't walking by faith.  Turn your eyes from self to the Lord today and trust in who He is.  Believe in the sovereignty of God and that He can and does work EVERYTHING out for the good of those who love Him who are called according to His purpose (Ro 8:28).

Father, we turn from self to You today.  Forgive our pride and self sufficiency.  We want to walk by faith and thus humbly before our God.  Increase our faith through You Word and help us to believe every jot and tittle and never doubt You.  It's in Jesus name we pray, amen!
