Genesis 38:12-14

Genesis 38:12–14 (ESV): "12 In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua's daughter, died. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And when Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep," 14 she took off her widow's garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage."

Our past mistakes can ruin our present reality if we let them. Yet God knowing all things uses our mistakes to accomplish His will and plan. How amazing is that?

Judah was a rebellious man. He left his brothers to associate with the sons of Ishmael. Finding a Canaanite wife for himself and having children with her Judah continued a fleshly walk. His kids took on his characteristics and rebelled against the Lord. He took a wife for his son Er from the Canaanites named Tamar. Er was so wicked God took his life from him leaving the duty of offspring to his brother Onan. He was to continue his bothers name but he would not so the Lord took his life from him. Judah then told Tamar when his youngest son Shelah was of age he would send him to her. He had no intentions of doing so and she knew it. Therefore when Tamar heard that Judah was mourning the death of his wife and that he was headed to Timnah she disguised herself and dressed up like a prostitute to lay with him and she became pregnant. When Judah heard she was pregnant he wanted her to be burned for having sex outside of marriage. But when Tamar revealed he was the father his tune changed. He recognized his wickedness in withholding his youngest son from her. She and her two sons are named in the lineage of Christ (Matt 1:3)!

As horrible as sin is, it can still be used to accomplish Gods will. It's not His will that we sin but when we sin He can still use it to accomplish His plan. Stop beating yourself up over your past. It has put you where you are and God is using it to accomplish His will. Stop sinning, yes! But where sin abounds grace abounds the more. Don't let your past hinder your present. Live under the umbrella of grace and do your best to walk in righteousness empowered by the spirit. If you mess up, repent and return to the Lord. Never stop walking!

Father we thank You that You are so amazing that not only can You forgive us of our past but You can use it for Your purposes. Help us to receive grace for mistakes we've made that are presently hindering our growth in You. If you can use Judah and his sinful offspring to bring about Your Only Begotten, You can use our mistakes. Cleanse us, forgive us, change us we pray in Jesus name, amen.
