Genesis 37:3–4 (ESV): "3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him."
Showing partiality and favoritism will cause division and disunity in any family or group, even in the church. Thankfully God is not partial. He favors no man over another.
Jacob grew up in a family that chose favorites. Issac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob. That family trait was passed on to Jacob who favored the son of his old age, Joseph. This was demonstrated when Jacob separated his family when fearing Esau would attack them. He put Rachel and Jacob in the most protected position. His favoritism became far more evident when he declared Joseph at the age of seventeen the future leader of the clan by giving him a robe of many colors. It was representative that he was chosen and distinguished above all the other sons. That produced great animosity amongst his brothers. It wasn't so much that he was chosen but more that they didn't have their fathers heart like Jospeh did. It will prove to bring the worst out of his brothers.
God may entrust and gift us very differently but it isn't in the name of favoritism. He has a unique plan for each of us and thus we need to be equipped differently to walk out our calling. Don't believe for a second that God loves someone else more than He loves you. He loves you with all the love He has to give. That is true for all of us. Let that truth overwhelm your heart today. He loves you, yes you! No matter how much you've messed up, He still loves you. He doesn't love anyone more than He loves you. You are chosen by Him, and offered a robe of righteousness through His Son. May that truth encourage you and set a precedence that we operate by in our lives. Show no partiality for it will produce division, disunity and dissension. Show the same love towards others that you've been shown for with God there is no partiality.
Father we thank You for giving us Your undivided love and favor. We thank You that You have chosen each of us for a unique race and journey. May we never compare our walks. Keep us from believing the lie that You love us less than someone else. May You guard our hearts from becoming partial. Let Your agape love shine through us we pray in Jesus name, amen!
