Genesis 30:1-5

Genesis 30:1–5 (ESV): "When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I shall die!" 2 Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?" 3 Then she said, "Here is my servant Bilhah; go in to her, so that she may give birth on my behalf, that even I may have children through her." 4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her. 5 And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son."

Envy is a terrible thing to contend with. The first sign of its presence is resentment for a blessing God has given someone else rather than you. Don't try and compete be content and rejoice with those being blessed.

Leah was always jealous of her sister Rachel. She was beautiful and sweet and probably the center of attention. However, Leah had finally become something Rachel was not, a mother. This caused Rachel, perhaps for the first time in her life, to envy her older sister. Her envy caused her to error the same way Sarah did. Rachel gave Jacob Bilhah her maidservant to bear a child on her behalf. Bilhah bore a son and Rachel named him Dan, which means "judge." She also bore Naphtali which means "my wrestling." Leah then gave Jacob her maidservant Zilpah, and she bore, Gad which means "troop" and Asher which means "happy." Leah then bore Issachar which means "hire" and Zebulun which means "habitation". Finally Rachel bore a son of her own, Joseph, which means "may God add". Envy will always leave you wanting more.

Beware that you aren't looking with spite towards those who God is blessing. He has blessed you already by sending His Son, if He were never to do another thing He has already done so much. Stop looking around with desire and look up with thankfulness. God owes you nothing and what He does in others lives ought to cause us great joy not grief. Praise Him for what He has done in your life and be content.

Father we thank You for being so good to us. You have done so much that if You were to never do another thing in our lives you've done far to much already. Protect our hearts from envy and discontentment. Fill us with thankfulness and humility that we might rejoice when those around us who are being blessed. Keep us content we pray in Jesus name. Amen.
