Genesis 19:23-26

Genesis 19:23–26 (ESV): "23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt."

The famous song "I Have Decided To Follow Jesus" was written by Indian missionary named Sadhu Sundar Singh. It was inspired by the words of a missionary from Welsh who came to Assam, India to spread the Gospel but was met with heavy persecution. His wife and kids were killed by the tribe and he was asked to renounce his faith to which he replied "I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back." He was killed as a result but the entire tribe came to Christ as a result. This inspired Singh to write this song. Never turn back Christian.

The two angels who accompanied the Lord at Abrahams home were sent to Sodom to destroy it. Lot met them at the city gate and pleaded with them to stay at his home for if left alone the men of Sodom would treat them wickedly. The angels told Lot that he and his family must leave. He tried to gather his children but they would not come. Lot drug his feet so finally the angels took Lot, his wife and two daughters by the hand and led them outside the city and told them not to look back for destruction was about to come upon this city. Lots wife looked back with a longing to be back in the city and she turned into a pillar of salt.

Your old life is not worthy to look back on with longing. It was filled with sin and sorrow, darkness and destruction. Why would you long for that again! God has saved our souls by the blood of Christ and this He is worthy of our gaze and longing. May we never look back to our old life but fix our eyes on Jesus as we sing "the world behind me, the cross before me, no turning back, no turning back."

Father we thank You for Your wondrous love. How great is Your mercy and grace. You are worthy of our longing. Remove the romanticized view of our past life. May we have eyes only for You. You have our hearts but remove anything that is hindering more intimacy with You we pray in Jesus name, amen!
