Genesis 13:11–13 (ESV): "11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord."Learning biblical directions is important. Going East in the Bible is always associated with exile (Gen 3:24). Traveling West is associated with moving towards God. Know you're directions and which way you are headed!
Abram and Lot had experience incredible blessings from God. Their livestock were numbered so great that it became overwhelming to manage on the land they were living together on. Thus Abram gave Lot the choice to go whatever direction he would like and Abram would go the opposite direction. Lot chose East towards Sodom and Gomorrah. It wouldn't be long before he and his family would feel the defects of this decision. After Lot had separated the Lord told Abram to look up as far as he could see would be the land that his descendants would inhabit. That land is now known as Israel.
God gives us choices every day to move closer to Him or further away. He doesn't force us to go West. We can choose to go East like Lot but it will never go well for anyone who chooses that path. Choose to go West each day and you will experience a new intimacy and depth with God that will satisfy your soul. Ask yourself today "what direction am I headed today" and then change course if necessary.
Father we thank You for giving us a compass for life. Your Spirit and Your Word direct us on the path that leads to life. Help us to choose to follow the instruments you've given us to keep us safe. Put in our hearts a continual desire is to move West and forgive us for moving East at times. We surrender our will to Yours, have Your way we pray in Jesus name, amen!
