Ezra 3:11–13 (ESV): "And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away."
Never live life looking backward. Keep your focus on what is before and ahead of you. That is a sure way to stay encouraged. If God is for you then you can trust that He is at work to do far more than what you have experienced in the past. Your best days are ahead not behind you!
When the first wave of exiles returned to Jerusalem they rebuilt the altar and offered sacrifices to the Lord. They also laid the foundation for the Temple. The people had mixed emotions about this, some rejoiced and sang praises to God while others wept in discouragement for the Temple would never be what it once was.
Living life in the rearview mirror is always a mistake. If you allow yourself to long for the way things used to be you will never be able to appreciate how things are and will be. God sent a prophet to the disappointed in Jerusalem to let them know that the present Temple would become exceedingly greater than the first Temple (Haggai 2:9). God always has greater things in store.
When things don't look like you thought they would don't weep as if you have no hope rejoice in the Lord and trust that He is at work to do exceeding abundantly more than you could hope or dream of. Keep your eyes forward and upward. Worship and give thanks always and watch and see if God doesn't show up in epic fashion.
Father, we thank You for all that You have and are doing. We rejoice in the present knowing that You have far greater things planned for us in the future. Let us not live with a longing for what once was but may we long for what will one day be! We look ahead to the return of Your Son and the gathering of Your people. We long for that day and until then may we rejoice in You always knowing that You are working everything out for Your greater glory and our greater good in Jesus name we pray, amen.
