Ezekiel 33:32–33 (ESV): 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 When this comes—and come it will!—then they will know that a prophet has been among them."
It's not enough to be a hearer of the Word of God, we must also be doers! Those who only hear deceive themselves but a doer will be blessed in his doing (Jam 1:22-25).
It wasn't too long after Ezekiel began to proclaim God's Word that the people of Israel sought him out to hear what he would say next because his prophecies were coming to pass. God told Ezekiel that although they come to hear, they will not do what I tell them to do. It is the most pathetic place for a man to be, a hearer but not a doer.
Many in our culture flock to churches across America to hear what God has to say but sadly not many hear it, and if they do, not many are willing to do what He says. It is the concept of having the appearance of godliness but denying its power (2 Tim 3:5). After Jesus gave His famous Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7), He made this statement, "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock...And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand (Matt 7:24)." Which foundation will endure the test of time? The one who not only hears but does for their foundation is sure and steady! Don't build on sand Christian! Your house will collapse when life happens. Build upon the rock by not just being a hearer of God's Word but a doer, Amen?
Father, we praise Your holy name for not only creating us with two ears to hear You but also two hands and feet to do what You say. Help us to walk out daily what You tell us to do. Let Your Word stir us up to good works and may it transform us into the image of Your Son we pray in Jesus name, amen!
