Ezekiel 17:22–24 (ESV): "22 Thus says the Lord God: "I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest. 24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord; I bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree flourish. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it."
God is the waymaker! Even when we don't see it He's working. When there was no way for us He provided a Tree that was firmly planted so all of mankind could by faith be grafted in and rejoice at the everlasting fruit it brings!
After much declaration and illustration regarding the waywardness of Israel God tells Ezekiel of a "Tree" who would come and establish a place of refuge and sustenance. That Tree is Jesus. He would allow all nations to be grafted in and receive the eternal fruit of salvation.
Isn't it interesting that the Tree (Jesus) would be planted by way of a tree (the cross)? Nevertheless, He was happy to do it because it was the only way for you and I to be grafted in. He made a way even while we still wayward (Rom 5:8). Take a moment today and say thank You. Christian, without Him we would be withered and dry, useless for nothing but by faith in Him we can flourishing and bear eternal fruit.
Father, we thank You for giving us Your Son. When times were grim You showed up and saved the day. Thank You for allowing us to be grafted into the Tree by way of the tree. May we never forget what it cost we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
