Esther 3:1-2

Esther 3:1–2 (ESV): "After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him. 2 And all the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage."

Obeying God over man will cost you but it's worth the sacrifice. God will show up mightily in the lives of those who are loyal to Him.

When King Xerxes began to rule in Persia there were many Jews present in his kingdom for they did not return to Jerusalem but opted to stay in Babylon. This would prove to be a foolish move but one God would use. Amongst them was Mordecai who was raising his younger cousin Esther.

Esther became Queen as a result of Queen Vashti's disobedience. One day Mordecai heard of a plan to assassinate King Xerxes so he told Esther who relayed it to the king. This brought opportunity for Haman, the Agagite to rise to power. When Saul was King of Israel God commanded him to wipe out the Amalekitesn but he disobeyed God allowing King Agag to live. Haman is his descendant.

A degree was given for all to bow before Haman and pay him homage but Mordecai would not for he told those who asked him the reason why for he was a Jew. This would unearth in the heart of Haman a long-standing hatred for the Jews.

If Saul would have obeyed God Haman wouldn't have existed. If Mordecai would have went back to Jerusalem with the small remnant that returned to Judah this wouldn't have happened. It's disobedience that brings this opportunity about but God still uses it. The benefits to obeying God far outweigh whatever cost we don't incur to do so. Its far better to obey and sacrifice upfront then to realize the consequences later.

Father, we thank You for the reminder of the importance of obeying You. Forgive us for not trusting You as we should at times. Create in is a heart to obey at all cost. You are worth far more than whatever it is we must give up. Strengthen us now to obey we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
